A reconsideration is a formal request asking Immigration New Zealand to review a declined temporary visa decision.
It is only available if:
When a reconsideration is lodged:
A different immigration officer reviews the decision
The original decision maker does not reassess the case
INZ reviews the original application together with any new or clarified information provided
If the original decision is found to be incorrect, a visa may be granted. If it is confirmed ascorrect, the decline stands.
Reconsideration requests often arise from issues such as:
These concerns must be addressed with clear, targeted evidence - not general explanations.
Only one reconsideration request is permitted.
Processing typically takes 5 weeks, depending on complexity
Your visa can still expire while reconsideration is under review, however you will not be deported while INZ is actively assessing the request
If reconsideration is declined and you no longer hold a valid visa, you must leave New Zealand promptly
Reconsideration is not available if you are already unlawful - Section 61 may be the only option
Reconsideration decisions are assessed by Immigration New Zealand on a case-by-case basis. Our role is to assess the decision, identify issues, and prepare clear, well-reasoned submissions that present each case accurately and effectively.
