An Overview of Partner of a New Zealander Resident Visa Requirements

Our licensed immigration professionals dedicated to provide the fastest, most cost-effective solutions for your New Zealand visa needs. We're thorough in our approach to ensure your visa application succeeds at minimal cost.

Partner eligibility

To support your residence application, your partner must meet Immigration New Zealand’s eligibility rules. This includes:

They can only have supported one previous partner for residence.

In the past 5 years, they must not have supported or been included in another partner residence application.

They must not be liable for deportation or have any deportation liability suspended.

Relationship requirements

You must show that your relationship is genuine and ongoing. This typically includes evidence that you:

Live together as a couple

Share responsibilities and, where relevant, finances

Spend time together and are recognised as a couple

Have a clear and consistent relationship timeline

Dependent children

You may include dependent children aged 24 or younger, if they meet the dependency requirements and you can provide:

Proof of identity and relationship (birth certificates/adoption papers)

Health and character documents (as required)

Custody evidence for children aged 15 or younger, where applicable

Special situations

In some cases, if your partner is a New Zealand citizen and you have been living together overseas for 5 years or more, Immigration New Zealand may consider granting a Permanent Resident Visa (depending on eligibility and travel history).
