Job Check

Need approval to fill a role with a migrant worker? A Job Check confirms that the role you want to fill meets New Zealand labour market and pay requirements before a migrant can apply for an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).

What is a Job check?

A Job Check is the second step in hiring a migrant under the AEWV system. Once you are an accredited employer, you must obtain Job Check approval for each role before offering it to a migrant worker.

Minimum Requirements

You must apply for a Job Check if you are hiring a migrant on:

Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)

Global Workforce Seasonal Visa (GWSV)

Peak Seasonal Visa (PSV)

When advertising is required

You must advertise the role unless it:

  • Is on the Green List and meets Green List requirements, or
  • Pays NZD $67.12 per hour or more, or
  • Is listed as an approved GWSV role, or
  • Is part of a business sale or restructure.

Advertising timeframes

  • ANZSCO skill level 1-3: minimum 14 days
  • ANZSCO skill level 4-5: minimum 21 days

An Overview of Job Check

Accredited employers need a job token from Immigration New Zealand, before the candidate can proceed with a visa application. The need for a labour market test (advertising the role) will be determined by the job title and pay rate.

Work and Income engagement

If the role is ANZSCO skill level 4 or 5, you must:

Engage in good faith with Work and Income, and

Interview any suitable candidates they refer.

For Peak Seasonal Visas, employers may alternatively obtain a Work and Income endorsement.

What Immigration New Zealand checks

INZ assesses whether:

The role is genuine and meets labour market requirements

The pay rate meets AEWV thresholds

Advertising and Work and Income engagement (if required) were completed correctly

The employment terms comply with New Zealand employment law

The role matches the stated ANZSCO or NOL code

Job Check validity

An approved Job Check is valid for 6 months

You must invite the migrant to apply for their AEWV within this period

Multiple roles

You can include multiple positions in one Job Check if:

Job title, pay, duties, location, and ANZSCO/NOL code are the same

The roles were covered by the same advertising and employment agreement

After approval

Once your Job Check is approved, you can:

Invite the migrant to apply for their AEWV

Support their visa application with the approved job details
