While you must have been living in a relationship with your partner, there is no requirement to be married to your partner and NO minimum period of living together when applying for a partnership work visa

Minimum Requirements

Genuine Relationship: Be living together in a genuine and stable relationship

Partner's Eligibility: Have a partner who holds (or is applying for) a New Zealand student visa

Partner's Qualification: Have a partner studying an eligible qualification

Sufficient Funds: Have at least NZD $4,200 available to support yourself

Living Arrangement: Have genuine intentions to live with your partner in New Zealand

Health and Character Requirements: You must meet health and character requirements.

An Overview of Partner of a Student Work Visa

Each partner visa option has specific eligibility requirements and restrictions, though many different options are available. A key requirement for all partnership-based visas is proving that you and your partner maintain a genuine and stable relationship.

Visa benefits

This visa allows you to:

Live with your partner in New Zealand

Work in any lawful employment

Study for up to 3 months

Travel in and out of New Zealand while your visa is valid

Support dependent children for visas after your work visa is granted

Visa conditions

Your partner must be studying towards a Level 9 or 10 qualification on the NZQCF,

or A Level 7 or 8 qualification that is:

  • On the Green List, or
  • On the Post-Study Work Visa eligible qualifications list, or
  • On the Long-Term Skill Shortage List (if study started on or before 7 September 2022)

You must remain in a genuine and stable relationship with your supporting partner
